New Gig

So I got this new job. I’m supporting a bunch of LAMP servers in development and production environments. I have to get used to a system here that utilizes cvs/svn as well as virtualization extensively. I think classes at the university level on this stuff would be invaluable. In fact, nowhere in the curriculum did we discuss source control or virtualization. I get to learn how to deal with vmware and xen servers. It’s kinda cool, in that they provide all sorts of nice little playgrounds and compartmentalized services.

I can’t believe this is actually happening, and it doesn’t look half bad.

Week

June 2nd, 2007 by mark

It’s been a strange week.

Monday night, an elderly patron of our local watering hole was shot in the head. I saw him and his lady that very night, apparently it was his birthday. The police have ruled out suicide, I don’t have any other details than that.

Tuesday night, Debbie and I were having dinner when her roommate called to say that someone had been shot in the head outside their apartment. Apparently that one was homicide, and we heard that someone was arrested for it later that night. What else? I took Debbie home in the morning and there was a pile of medical waste sitting at the side of the road. An ambulance did come pick it up, but why was it sitting out there all night? Syringes, bandages, etc. Gross.

Before you think something like “well you choose to live in the big bad city”, this sort of thing doesn’t happen around here. This is very, very unusual. Especially for it to happen twice.
